New Construction Episode 8: Countertops & Tile
New Construction Series: Episode 8
We’ve made it to one of the most exciting stages of the new construction process—countertops and tile!
In Episode 7, we watched the home transform as texture, finish carpentry, and cabinets went in. Now those cabinets are about to get their finishing touch, and all those design selections you made months ago are finally starting to come to life.
Countertops Go In
Once the cabinets are installed and ready, it’s time for the countertops.
Depending on your builder and selections, your home may have quartz, granite, marble, or another countertop material. Before installation, the countertops are carefully measured and fabricated to fit your kitchen and bathroom cabinetry.
Once they're installed, the difference is huge. The kitchen suddenly looks like an actual kitchen!
This is also when you'll start seeing openings for sinks, faucets, and sometimes cooktops, depending on your home's design.
Time for Tile
Tile is another one of those finishes that can completely change the personality of a home.
During this stage, you may see:
-
Shower and tub surrounds
-
Bathroom floors
-
Kitchen backsplashes
-
Fireplace surrounds
-
Decorative accent tile
-
Other tiled areas throughout the home
This is where the colors, patterns, and finishes you chose at the design center really start working together.
Don't Forget About the Details
Countertops and tile may be beautiful, but installation matters just as much as the materials themselves.
With countertops, you'll want to pay attention to seams, edges, chips or cracks, and how the material fits against the cabinetry and walls.
With tile, look at the overall pattern and spacing. Are the grout lines consistent? Are the tiles level? Are there cracked or damaged pieces? If your design includes an accent or pattern, was it installed the way you selected it?
Natural materials like stone can have variations in color and pattern, so not every difference is necessarily a defect. But if something doesn't look right, ask about it.
This Is Why Your Design Selections Matter
Remember all those decisions you made months ago when the house was still mostly plans and framing?
This is when they start making sense.
Your cabinet color, countertop selection, backsplash, flooring, wall color, and other finishes all need to work together. Individually, they may have looked like small samples in a design center. Now you're finally seeing the bigger picture.
And this is exactly why I always recommend thinking about the entire room when making new construction selections—not just choosing each item individually.
We're Almost There!
At this point, your new construction home is getting very close to the finish line.
The cabinets are in. The countertops are installed. The tile is going up. And the home you've been watching come together for months is finally starting to look like the one you imagined.
But we're not quite done yet!
