Episode 7: Texture, Carpentry & Cabinets

The House Starts to Feel Like Home

We’ve officially reached one of my favorite stages of the new construction process! Up until now, so much of the work has been about what’s behind the walls. But during this stage, the details you’ll actually see every day start going in.

Welcome to texture, carpentry, and cabinets—when your new house really starts looking like a home.

First Up: Wall Texture

Once the drywall has been hung, taped, floated, and sanded, it’s time for texture.

Texture gives the walls and ceilings their finished surface and helps hide the small imperfections that naturally occur with drywall. Depending on the builder and your selections, you might see orange peel, knockdown, smooth walls, or another finish.

This may seem like a small detail, but it has a surprisingly big impact on the overall look of the home.

Then Comes the Carpentry

Next, the finish carpenters get to work—and this is where you start seeing some of those architectural details come together.

Baseboards, window trim, door casings, crown molding, shelving, stair components, decorative wall treatments, and other millwork may all be installed during this stage.

This is also where craftsmanship really matters. Clean cuts, tight joints, straight trim, and properly installed details make a huge difference in how polished the finished home feels.

And Then… Cabinets!

If there’s one thing that can instantly transform a construction site, it’s cabinets.

Once the kitchen and bathroom cabinetry starts going in, you can finally visualize how these spaces are going to function. Your cabinet color, style, layout, hardware selections, and storage options all begin bringing the design together.

And remember: cabinets aren't just about looks. Pay attention to functionality too.

Think about things like:

  • Where will your trash cans go?

  • Do you have enough drawers?

  • Is there convenient storage for pots and pans?

  • Where will small appliances live?

  • Did you add pull-outs, deep drawers, or other organizational features?

These are the details that can make a beautiful kitchen much easier to actually live in.

What Should You Be Watching For?

As exciting as this stage is, this is also a great time to pay attention to the details.

Look for damaged cabinet doors, uneven gaps, missing trim, poorly aligned drawers, rough carpentry, or anything that doesn't match your selections. Not every little imperfection is a major problem, but it's much easier to ask questions now than after everything is painted and finished.

The Fun Part Is Just Getting Started

At this point, your home has walls, rooms, trim, and cabinets—and suddenly you can actually picture yourself living there.

But we're not finished yet.

Next up: Episode 8 — Countertops & Tile.

And trust me, that's when all those design selections you made months ago really start coming together.
